The National Bureau of Statistics says several food items, including tomatoes, beans, garri, onions and ginger, recorded month-on-month price increases in April 2026 despite some year-on-year declines.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says prices of key food commodities, including tomatoes, beans, garri, onions, ginger and palm oil, recorded month-on-month increases in April 2026.
This was contained in the agency’s Selected Food Prices Watch Report released in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the report, the average price of one kilogramme of tomatoes rose by 6.60 per cent from N1,104.85 in March 2026 to N1,177.92 in April 2026.
However, the NBS noted that tomato prices declined by 8.23 per cent on a year-on-year basis compared to N1,283.57 recorded in April 2025.
The report also showed that the average price of one kilogramme of brown beans increased by 0.99 per cent month-on-month, rising from N1,325.85 in March to N1,338.93 in April.
Despite the monthly increase, bean prices dropped significantly by 44.89 per cent compared to N2,429.39 recorded in April 2025.
Similarly, the average price of one kilogramme of white garri rose by 0.93 per cent from N801.54 in March to N808.96 in April.
On a yearly basis, however, garri prices declined by 39.86 per cent from N1,345.10 recorded during the same period last year.
The NBS further reported that onion prices increased by 0.98 per cent, moving from N1,153.14 in March to N1,164.39 in April.
Year-on-year, the price of onions fell by 22.56 per cent from N1,503.56 recorded in April 2025.
Fresh ginger also witnessed a marginal increase of 0.73 per cent month-on-month, climbing from N5,541.25 to N5,581.82.
Unlike some other food items, ginger recorded a 12.30 per cent annual increase from N4,970.66 in April 2025.
The report added that the average price of one litre of palm oil rose slightly by 0.12 per cent from N2,393.38 in March to N2,396.32 in April.
Palm oil also recorded a year-on-year increase of 4.77 per cent.
On state-by-state analysis, the NBS said Bayelsa recorded the highest average price for one kilogramme of tomatoes at N1,600.73, while Plateau had the lowest at N730.48.
For brown beans, Oyo recorded the highest average price at N1,938.91, while Taraba had the lowest at N750.
The report showed that Abia recorded the highest average price for white garri at N1,075.47, while Plateau posted the lowest at N517.94.
Abia also recorded the highest onion prices, while Kwara and Nasarawa recorded some of the lowest prices.
For palm oil, Ekiti recorded the highest average price at N2,819.09, while Abia posted the lowest at N2,024.41.
Zonal analysis showed that the South-South recorded the highest average tomato prices at N1,561.10, followed by the South-East at N1,379.57.
The North-West recorded the lowest tomato prices at N822.72.
The report further indicated that the South-West and South-South zones recorded the highest average prices for brown beans, while the North-East posted the lowest.
For garri and onions, the South-East recorded some of the highest average prices, while the North-Central reported the lowest averages.
The NBS added that the South-West recorded the highest average price for fresh ginger, while the North-East had the lowest.
