Addressing the press on the district’s political landscape, Senator Nwebonyi dismisses single-term zoning rumors, citing massive federal road allocations and grassroots empowerment schemes.
The Deputy Senate Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has strongly admonished the people of the Izzi clan in Ebonyi State to completely reject any form of internal tribalism and align behind their leaders to sustain regional peace and development.
Nwebonyi, who represents the Ebonyi North Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the call on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
Speaking to journalists on the unfolding political dynamics in his constituency, the federal lawmaker warned that external political saboteurs are actively weaponizing internal kinship differences to fracture the solidarity of the clan.
The ranking legislator explained that the recent wave of lineage friction within the territory is being artificially fueled by outside political forces attempting to weaken the ruling party’s base. He noted that God has strategically positioned the state governor, Right Honourable Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru – who also hails from the Izzi clan – to act as a unifying force.
Nwebonyi emphasized that the shared vision between the executive and the legislature has successfully bridged historic gaps, enabling the people to rise above all divisive tendencies.
Addressing lingering rumors regarding an unwritten single-term zoning arrangement within the district, Nwebonyi clarified that his decision to seek re-election ahead of the 2027 general elections does not violate any constitutional or localized political pact.
He challenged proponents of the single-term rumor to present verified documentary evidence of such an agreement. To validate his position, he pointed out that his immediate predecessor, the first executive governor of the state, Senator Sam Egwu, comfortably represented the zone for two full terms.
“The wave of kindred dichotomy presently in the clan is caused by an external force which we know. We still have some propagators among us, but our message to them is that the days of kindred division are over. The governor is from the Igbojima kindred while I come from Unwueroh, but we have bonded well to lift entire Ebonyi. Our style of leadership epitomizes humility and hard work, devoid of high-handedness. Our people must desist from divisive actions,” Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi declared.
Having successfully clinched the APC return ticket during the recent party primaries, the Deputy Senate Whip expressed absolute confidence regarding his chances at the upcoming 2027 general polls.
He noted that his effective representation in the red chamber has yielded unmatched dividends for the district. Nwebonyi revealed that his office has attracted over 400 kilometers of federal road construction linking Ebonyi to Cross River, Benue, Nasarawa, and Abuja. This is in addition to constructing 10 kilometers of local concrete roads, funding higher education scholarships for over 500 students, and providing modern farming tools and inputs to over 10,000 rural farmers.
