Following a violent collision that caused a commercial Volkswagen bus to somersault on the highway, emergency responders activate rescue protocols to save lives and clear vehicular gridlock.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has successfully rescued two individuals who became trapped inside the mangled remains of a commercial vehicle following a multi-car collision.
The accident occurred on Sunday along the busy Ogudu-Alapere inward Motorway and Tollgate corridor in Lagos.
The successful extraction was confirmed in an official statement issued in Lagos by the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, through the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo.
According to the agency’s field reports, the high-impact highway accident involved a large 12-tyre DAF articulated truck and a commercial Volkswagen T4 bus bearing registration number AA 60 YF. Preliminary investigations conducted at the scene revealed that the commercial bus somersaulted multiple times due to the force of the initial collision. The impact left the driver and a passenger pinned inside the crushed steel structure, bringing vehicular movement along the arterial road to a complete standstill.
LASTMA operatives on routine surveillance patrol along the corridor arrived at the scene within minutes and activated emergency rescue protocols.
Working alongside other first responders, the team deployed specialized extraction equipment to cut through the metal and safely pull the victims from the crushed frame.
The injured individuals were immediately handed over to paramedics from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for emergency stabilization and medical evacuation.
“LASTMA operatives swiftly responded and activated emergency rescue protocols to safeguard lives and restore traffic flow. The operatives, in collaboration with other emergency responders, successfully extricated the victims from the wreckage and handed them over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical attention,” the General Manager stated.
Officers from the Ketu Division of the Nigeria Police Force provided vital security support, managing onlookers and maintaining crowd control throughout the high-pressure operation.
Once the victims were cleared, traffic teams moved in to tow away the damaged vehicles, clearing the obstruction and restoring normal traffic flow to the highway.
Commending his team’s swift response, Bakare-Oki urged commercial drivers and heavy-duty truck operators to perform routine maintenance checks on their vehicles and obey speed limits, reminding motorists that ensuring safety on the state’s highways requires collective responsibility.
