The Management of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has asked for patience from residents in Emene and surrounding areas as engineers work to repair critical infrastructure damaged by a severe windstorm.
The Management of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has issued an appeal to customers in Emene and its environs, seeking patience and understanding over a prolonged power outage. The disruption was triggered by a wire cut on the Emene Industrial Lines 1 and 2 towers, alongside other technical faults resulting from a heavy windstorm on May 3, 2026.
The Managing Director of MEDL, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, made the appeal on Wednesday during a physical inspection of the repair site located near the Naira Triangle axis in Emene, Enugu. He was accompanied by the company’s top technical leadership, including Chief Technical Officer Engr. Chimezie Chukwu and Head of Operations Engr. Ikenna Mbamablu.
Dr. Mupwaya expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to several high-priority and residential areas, including:
- Akanu Ibiam International Airport
- Industrial Zones: Emenite and Alo Aluminium
- Residential Estates: Sunrise Estate, Conraws Estate, and Akpuoga
- Communities: Nkwubor, Ugwuomu, Rehab Road, and the Adoration areas.
While the initial damage was caused by the weather, Dr. Mupwaya explained that the restoration has been delayed by new technical challenges discovered during the restringing process. Specifically, engineers found that the towers required additional reinforcement to prevent collapse, a step deemed necessary to protect the lives and property of residents living near the tower locations.
Furthermore, the Managing Director clarified that the current outages in Trans Ekulu, Thinkers Corner, Ituku-Ozalla, and Ugwogo are not due to direct faults in those areas. Instead, power to these 33KV lines was deliberately cut to provide a safe working environment for the engineers working at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Switch Yard at the New Haven Station.
MEDL assured the public that the reconductoring and reinforcement work is being treated with the utmost urgency.
“We are reinforcing the towers to ensure a permanent fix and to guarantee the safety of the public,” Dr. Mupwaya stated. “We expect the works to be completed soon, and supply will be restored to all affected areas once the safety certifications are in place.”
The company urged residents to remain calm and avoid the construction zones while the Quick Response Team completes the delicate restringing operations.
