EERC Downgrades 59 MainPower Feeders Over Poor Electricity Supply in Enugu
The Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission, EERC, has directed to immediately downgrade 59 electricity feeders across Enugu State following persistent complaints by consumers, especially Band A customers, over reduced hours of power supply.
In a public notice issued by the Commission and sighted by this publication, the regulator said the decision followed a technical and safety audit carried out on major injection substations operated by MainPower, as well as continued monitoring of feeder performance through the Electronic Design and Manufacturing International (EDMI) Multidrive Manager platform.
According to the Commission, findings from both the physical inspection and online monitoring system confirmed complaints from customers that MainPower failed to provide the minimum supply hours required under the Service-Based Tariff (SBT) regime. The SBT framework ties electricity tariffs to the number of hours customers receive power daily.
The Commission stated that the downgrade became necessary because consumers were allegedly paying for higher service bands without receiving the corresponding quality and duration of power supply. It added that all affected feeders listed in its directive must now be moved to their appropriate service bands with immediate effect.
The regulator, however, noted that MainPower may seek restoration or upgrade of any downgraded feeder once it can prove that such feeder met the required minimum hours of electricity availability in the preceding month in line with the SBT framework.
The development is expected to affect tariff classifications for thousands of electricity consumers across Enugu State, particularly customers previously categorized under Band A, who are expected to receive a minimum of 20 hours of daily power supply under existing regulations.
Residents and stakeholders were advised to access the full feeder downgrade schedule through the Commission’s official website of EERC.
The notice was officially signed by the Commission.
