NDC: Obetta Declares Himself Authentic Enugu Chairman Amid Leadership Crisis

Following the party’s successful National Convention in Abuja, Mr. Ibuchukwu Obetta has reaffirmed his leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, revealing that multiple aspirants have already queued up for the 2027 gubernatorial race.

Mr. Ibuchukwu Obetta has declared that he remains the authentic Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu Dtate. Speaking with journalists in Enugu on Monday, Obetta clarified that the leadership disputes previously affecting the state chapter have been fully resolved following the party’s recent National Convention in Abuja.

“I am the chairman of NDC in Enugu State. All issues have been resolved during our National Convention,” Obetta stated. He noted that the state chapter has successfully concluded its ward, local government, and state congresses, positioning the party as a formidable force ahead of its upcoming primaries.

The Chairman disclosed that the NDC is witnessing a surge in interest from political aspirants. According to Obetta, four individuals have already indicated their intention to run for the Enugu State governorship in 2027.

“I cannot disclose their names now for security reasons until after the primaries, which will hold at the interval of this month,” he added. He further revealed that the party is seeing significant interest across Enugu West and Enugu North senatorial zones for seats in the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, and the Senate.

A key focus for the state chapter is the upcoming Enugu North senatorial district bye-election, scheduled for June 20, 2026, following the passing of Senator Okey Ezea. Obetta confirmed that four aspirants have emerged under the NDC banner for this specific race.

“We are currently discussing with them to find out their mission for the senatorial district and ensure they align with the party’s vision for the people of Nsukka zone,” the chairman said.

Obetta characterized the NDC as the “beautiful bride” of the current Nigerian political landscape. He attributed this rising profile to the recent entry of high-profile leaders like Mr. Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso into the party, alongside the successful completion of the national convention which recently zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

Prior to the convention, the Enugu chapter had faced a minor leadership tussle involving a faction led by Johnpaul Ani. However, Obetta’s latest pronouncement suggests a consolidated leadership structure as the party prepares for its first major electoral test in June.
