Makinde Dismisses Viral Reports Of Naming Preferred 2027 Successor

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially debunked social media rumors claiming he has endorsed Bimbo Adekanmbi as his successor for the 2027 governorship election.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has not named any successor yet to contest the 2027 governorship election, according to a statement from his media aide, Dr. Suleimon Olanrewaju.

In a press release issued on Thursday in Ibadan, Olanrewaju, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, dismissed viral reports circulating on social media that suggested Makinde had picked Mr. Bimbo Adekanmbi as his preferred choice to lead the state after his tenure.

The denial follows a wave of online speculation on Wednesday evening claiming a deal had been finalized. However, Olanrewaju clarified that the governor is still engaged in wide-reaching consultations and will only make his choice known to the public at the appropriate time. “The governor will publicly announce his preferred governorship candidate once consultations are concluded,” he stated, urging the public to disregard unverified reports.

The rumors centered on Bimbo Adekanmbi, a former Commissioner for Finance under the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who has remained a prominent figure in the state’s political landscape.

In 2025, Makinde notably appointed Adekanmbi as the chairman of the committee overseeing the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport, a flagship infrastructure project that has fueled perceptions of a close political alliance.

While the governor’s camp has moved to quell these specific rumors, political observers note that the speculation has already triggered a flurry of reactions within the ruling PDP and among opposition parties.

As alignments for the 2027 polls gather momentum, there remains intense curiosity regarding whether Makinde will unveil a new political platform or formalize his support for a specific candidate before the weekend.
