The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria has conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Botswana following the death of former President Festus Mogae at the age of 86.
In a statement issued on Friday by the spokesperson of the ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Federal Government described the late African statesman as a respected leader whose contributions to democratic governance, economic stability, and social development earned global recognition.
According to the statement, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended heartfelt sympathies to Botswana during what she described as a difficult national moment.
“Nigeria joins the people of Botswana in mourning the loss of a leader whose commitment to public service and principled leadership contributed significantly to Botswana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies,” the statement read.
The ministry noted that the late Festus Mogae, who served as President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008, was widely admired for promoting transparent governance, democratic consolidation, and sustainable economic reforms during his time in office.
Nigeria also acknowledged his leadership in confronting the HIV/AIDS crisis at a critical period in Botswana’s history, describing his administration’s response as bold and visionary.
“Former President Mogae demonstrated courageous leadership by placing human dignity and public welfare at the centre of governance during Botswana’s fight against HIV/AIDS,” the statement added.
Beyond his domestic achievements, the Federal Government further praised the former Botswana leader for his continued involvement in peacebuilding and regional stability initiatives across Africa after leaving office.
The ministry said Mogae’s humility, statesmanship, and dedication to African development earned him admiration across the continent and within the international community.
It further reaffirmed the cordial bilateral relations between Nigeria and Botswana, noting that both nations share common aspirations anchored on democratic values, peace, and sustainable development.
“At this moment of national mourning in Botswana, the Government and people of Nigeria stand in solidarity with the Government and people of Botswana and pray for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and the nation,” the statement concluded.
