A Federal High Court in Kaduna has Jailed an ex-convict for three years after he pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis, tramadol and other hard drugs, with the court ordering destruction of the exhibits.

A Federal High Court in Kaduna has sentenced a 26-year-old ex-convict, Abel Godwin, to three years imprisonment for unlawful possession of hard drugs.

The prosecutor for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr. T. J. Atserhegh, told the court that the convict, who resides in Malali, Kaduna State, was arrested on April 4 by officials of the agency.

He said the anti-drug agency charged Godwin with unlawful possession of hard drugs including 3kg of cannabis, 5kg of tramadol and 8g of Exol-5, described as similar to cocaine and other narcotics.

According to the prosecution, the offence contravened Section 19 of the NDLEA Act, Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 (as amended).

When the charge was read, Godwin pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

However, the prosecutor informed the court that the defendant was a second offender, having previously been jailed for six months in February 2025 by the Federal High Court.

Delivering judgment, Justice Mohammed Garba sentenced Godwin to one year imprisonment on each of the three counts without an option of fine.

“The sentences of one year for each of the three-count charge will run consecutively, totalling three years in all, without any option of fine.

“This is to serve as a deterrent to others, considering your age and your determination to be a notorious criminal,” the judge held.

The court also ordered that the hard drugs tendered as exhibits be destroyed by the NDLEA 30 days after the judgment.
