Yobe Approves Allowance Boost For Media Workers In State Outfits

Yobe Government approves weigh-in allowance for journalists and non-journalists in state-owned media outfits, with payments set at 35% and 20% of basic salaries.

The Yobe State Government has approved the implementation of a weigh-in allowance for journalists and non-journalists working in state-owned media organisations.

The approval was conveyed in a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Mrs. Zainab Muhammad Ago, on behalf of the Head of Service, and made available to journalists on Monday.

According to the letter, the decision followed a joint request by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union (RATTAWU).

The document explained that the request was in line with the weigh-in allowance applicable to workers in radio and television stations, as well as the State Council for Arts and Culture.

It directed immediate implementation of the allowance as approved by the Head of Service.

Under the new arrangement, journalists will receive 35 percent of their basic salary, while non-journalists will receive 20 percent of their basic salary.

The letter noted that members of the two unions had previously enjoyed the allowance before the implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage. It further directed the Ministry of Finance to implement the approved allowance accordingly.
