Nigeria’s electoral body has called for intensified voter education and stakeholder engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections to ensure peaceful and credible polls.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for intensified voter education ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of public awareness in ensuring credible and peaceful polls.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, Obo Effanga, made the call on Monday during a meeting with members of the Directorate of Politics and Governance of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Region 57, in Uyo.
Effanga said religious organisations play a critical role in shaping public opinion and mobilising citizens to participate responsibly in the democratic process.
He noted that involving faith-based groups in voter education campaigns would strengthen democratic participation and encourage peaceful elections.
“We are working with a very tight election schedule and we need stakeholders to help sensitise the public to election procedures,” he said.
He urged religious leaders to encourage their members to act responsibly during elections and support efforts aimed at promoting credible polls.
The INEC commissioner also revealed that the commission would soon begin the revalidation of the voter register to determine the accurate number of eligible voters in the country ahead of the 2027 polls.
The exercise, he said, would help improve the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Earlier, Udeme Udofia, Coordinator of the Directorate of Politics and Governance (DPG) for RCCG Region 57 in Akwa Ibom, said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with INEC.
According to him, the partnership is intended to promote responsible citizenship and encourage active participation in governance.
Udofia explained that the DPG unit of RCCG was established to provide political education on governance processes, civic responsibility and voter participation among church members.
