Police have confirmed the disruption of an African Democratic Congress political gathering in Bakassi, Cross River State, after suspected political thugs invaded the venue and scattered the event materials.

The Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State has confirmed the disruption of a political gathering organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Bakassi Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed this on Sunday while reacting to a viral video showing suspected political thugs invading the venue of the party’s activity.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Saturday just as the gathering was about to begin.

Eitokpah explained that a group of hoodlums suddenly stormed the venue and disrupted the event.

“The hoodlums came from nowhere and scattered the canopies, chairs and sound systems that had been arranged for the programme,” he said.

In the viral footage circulating online, a man identified as one of the attackers was heard instructing others to destroy the setup, claiming that members of the ADC were absent when their rivals were “busy fixing the council area.”

The police spokesperson said security operatives quickly intervened to prevent the situation from escalating into a wider crisis.

He noted that officers and tactical teams were immediately deployed to the area to restore calm.

“The situation has been brought under control to prevent it from snowballing into a full-blown crisis,” Eitokpah said.

However, he added that the event could not continue following the disruption.

“In such a chaotic situation, and considering the volatile nature of the area, for now, no arrests have been made,” he stated.

The latest disruption comes days after a similar incident involving the ADC in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.

Earlier in the week, activities organised by the party were also reportedly disrupted in the city.

Following the incident, the ADC raised concerns over what it described as attempts to hijack the party’s structure within the state.

Authorities have yet to announce further investigations into the latest disruption.
