Police in Benue State have confirmed that six cashew farmers were killed after suspected terrorists attacked communities in Apa Local Government Area while the victims were working on their farms.

The police spokesperson in the state, Edet Udeme, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Makurdi.

According to her, the attackers struck on Friday while the victims were working on their farms in the communities of Asaba, Ojantele and Okpette.

Udeme said joint security teams comprising operatives of the police, the military and local youths from the affected communities immediately mobilised into nearby forests to conduct search and rescue operations.

“At the end of the initial operation, six lifeless bodies were recovered; efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety of residents in the affected communities,” she said.

The spokesperson added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ifeanyi Emenari, had deployed additional security personnel to strengthen operations in the area.

According to her, the reinforcements are aimed at facilitating a more coordinated operation to track down those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.

She noted that security patrols had been intensified across the affected communities and other parts of the state to prevent further attacks.

Udeme also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
