The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has reminded officers that the agency’s core mandate is to save lives rather than merely enforce traffic regulations.
Mohammed made the statement during a workshop held at the corps’ headquarters in Calabar on Tuesday, describing the engagement as a time for reflection and renewed commitment to professionalism.
The workshop followed the circulation of videos on social media showing incidents involving the manhandling of FRSC personnel and destruction of corps property.
Represented by the Corps Secretary, Mr Godwin Etukidem, Mohammed said the recent deployment of senior officers to various field commands was prompted by troubling operational reports that required urgent corrective action.
He disclosed that declining discipline, weak command structures and cases of misconduct had been recorded in several commands in recent months.
The corps marshal identified unethical practices, abuse of authority, extortion and reckless enforcement as behaviours undermining public trust and damaging the institution’s credibility.
“These actions are unacceptable because they violate regulations and core values. The corps’ authority flows from public trust, and compromised integrity weakens operational effectiveness,” he said.
Mohammed stressed that professionalism is non-negotiable, urging officers to be firm but fair in carrying out their duties, without intimidation or personal gain.
He described extortion and harassment as illegal and a betrayal of the oath sworn by personnel, adding that commanders must lead by example and never ignore misconduct.
He assured that accountability mechanisms would be strengthened, ethical conduct rewarded and violations sanctioned to restore confidence in the corps.
Earlier, the FRSC Sector Commander in Cross River, Mr Innocent Etuk, acknowledged that while the corps had maintained strong operational standards for 38 years, recent behavioural lapses among some personnel had eroded public trust.
He said the workshop aimed to refocus officers on the agency’s founding mandate and promote a shift in mindset toward service-oriented road safety operations.
