The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has deepened its international collaboration drive following a high-level diplomatic engagement with the Embassy of Sweden in Nigeria aimed at expanding partnerships in education, research and innovation.

Sweden’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm, recently visited the university, marking a significant step in UNN’s strategic push to broaden global alliances and strengthen its internationalisation agenda.

Receiving the ambassador at the university’s Enugu Campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to robust cross-border collaborations that will benefit both staff and students.

The engagement builds on more than six decades of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Sweden and highlights ongoing academic cooperation, particularly Sweden’s sustained support for the Resource and Environmental Policy Research Centre, Environment for Development (REPRC–EfD) Nigeria, hosted at UNN.

Ambassador Westerholm emphasised Sweden’s long-standing investment in education as a catalyst for sustainable development, noting that partnerships with institutions like UNN remain central to Sweden’s international cooperation strategy.

“We are building long-term partnerships with academia, industry and government, while deepening our age-long relationship with the University of Nigeria,” she said, stressing that investment in young people and research is critical to national transformation.

Prof. Ortuanya described the visit as a signal of growing international confidence in UNN’s research capacity and institutional stability. He reiterated that the university, Nigeria’s first indigenous institution, remains committed to producing innovative and globally competitive graduates.

“Our doors remain open for robust and mutually beneficial partnerships across multiple disciplines,” he said, highlighting priority areas such as engineering, computing, robotics and Artificial Intelligence, alongside environmental sustainability and climate research.

A key component of the engagement was a technical session involving Swedish industry representatives who proposed supporting the full digitalisation of university records and strengthening entrepreneurship education through digital skills development. The initiative is expected to enhance innovation, self-employment and job creation among students.

The ambassador’s visit follows earlier interactions coordinated by UNN’s Directorate of International Collaborations. An initial Swedish delegation led by Fredrik Ahsberg visited the university in August 2025, laying the groundwork for structured institutional dialogue.

The Director of International Collaborations, Dr Kelechi Nnamani, said efforts are underway to translate diplomatic goodwill into measurable collaborative outcomes.

The development comes barely a month after UNN hosted the Ambassador of Taiwan in another strategic engagement designed to position the university within broader global education and research networks.
