The Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday unveiled Nigeria’s First Baby of the Year 2026, born exactly at midnight at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja.
The newborn, Zion Adakole, was delivered via caesarean section to a 26-year-old first-time mother, Mrs. Patience Adakole, and her husband, Mr. Celestine Adakole.
Continuing her long-standing tradition of promoting maternal and child healthcare, the First Lady presented a National Birth Certificate issued by the National Population Commission (NPC) to the baby, officially recognising him as Nigeria’s Baby of the Year.
She also presented gift items and cash to the newborn, a gesture she extended to other babies delivered at the hospital on the same day.
Hospital management confirmed that Zion Adakole was the first baby delivered at the facility in 2026.
Mrs. Tinubu described the birth as highly symbolic, representing both the beginning of a new year and the promise of fresh hope for the nation.
She extended warm gestures to three other babies born on January 1, as well as a set of quadruplets delivered to Mr. and Mrs. Blessing Oragwu after 13 years of waiting.
The First Lady reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to creating conditions that allow every Nigerian baby to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.
During the visit, she personally held each newborn, offering prayers for the babies, their parents, and the nation at large.
She urged parents to cherish and nurture their children, describing every baby as a blessing and a future leader of Nigeria.
Mrs. Tinubu also called on Nigerians to embrace compassion and collective responsibility by supporting the less privileged in society.
The visit is expected to continue to other hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory, including the National Hospital, Abuja.
She was accompanied by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima; the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Mr. Aminu Yusuf; and other dignitaries.
