The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged youths in Akwa Ibom State to promote peace and shun all forms of negative behaviour during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The call was made by the NOA Director in Akwa Ibom, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, in an interview with journalists on Monday in Uyo.
Mkpoutom said the festive season should not be an avenue for criminal activities or violence, but rather a time to strengthen peace, love and unity within communities.
According to him, Christmas offers an opportunity for reflection, relaxation and the extension of goodwill to one another, stressing that youths have a critical role to play in ensuring peaceful celebrations.
“Let’s use the period to enjoy ourselves and support others. Let’s avoid unlawful acts and make it a peaceful season,” he said.
The NOA director urged youths to celebrate responsibly and ensure that the season is remembered for harmony rather than disorder.
“Let this year’s festive season be remembered for kindness and responsible celebration rather than lawlessness and violence,” Mkpoutom added.
He further encouraged residents of Akwa Ibom State to reflect on the true meaning and essence of Christmas, describing it as a period that symbolises peace and goodwill to all.
“Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, a figure that represents peace and goodwill. Let us reflect on His teachings by encouraging compassion, forgiveness and kindness in our communities,” he said.
Mkpoutom expressed optimism that if youths embraced peace and positive values during the festive season, communities across the state would enjoy a safer, more united and joyful celebration.
