Nkanu West LG Intensifies Community Security and Road Safety Ahead of Christmas

Community Security – Nkanu West LG rolls out stronger community security and road safety operations for the Christmas season, with enhanced vigilance, traffic control plans, and inter-agency collaboration.

As Christmas activities begin to build up across Enugu State, Nkanu West Local Government has activated comprehensive community security and road safety strategies to ensure residents celebrate in peace. The Chairman, Mr. John Chukwuma Ogbodo, announced these measures while addressing the Neighbourhood Watch Group, the Police, Civil Defence, the Road Safety Corps, and the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Agbani LG council headquarters.

Speaking at the event, the chairman stressed that community security remains the top priority of his administration during the festive season, especially as increased movements, commercial activities, nightlife, and holiday travels often heighten security risks in local communities. According to him, “Our communities must remain safe throughout this Christmas period. We are taking every step necessary to reinforce community security and prevent any breach.”

Ogbodo, the chief security officer of the local government, underscored that effective community security will complement the efforts of Governor Peter Mbah, whose recent deployment of high-capacity surveillance drones has significantly boosted state-wide forest and border monitoring. He described the new technology as a game-changer that now allows law enforcement to track suspicious activity in real time.

To encourage efficiency, Mr. Ogbodo announced that members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group would receive their monthly stipends immediately after the meeting, and timely going forward. He noted that improved welfare enhances commitment, discipline, and operational output, which are crucial for maintaining community security during this busy season.

Beyond general security, the chairman also emphasized road safety, noting that Nkanu West is a major transit corridor for travellers heading to and from the Enugu metropolis. He listed several traffic hotspots–including Ozalla Four Corners, Orie Mba Akpugo, Agbani Road, and the Agbani–Amurri stretch–as areas that will receive priority attention.

To tackle congestion and reduce accidents, John Ogbodo announced the formation of a multi-agency traffic task force comprising the Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Civil Defence, and the Neighbourhood Watch Group. This team, he said, will be inaugurated immediately and deployed throughout the Christmas and New Year period.

In their separate remarks, the Agbani Area Commander, Addistsnt Commissioner of Police, ACP, Alibi Lateef, emphasized the importance of vigilance, saying, “This season demands heightened alertness. The Neighbourhood Watch must work closely with us to strengthen community security and report any suspicious activity without delay.”

Also speaking, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Agbani, Mr. Igbokwe Eze, urged residents to avoid acts that could compromise safety, noting, “The use of knockouts and explosives will not be tolerated. Anyone caught violating this rule will be dealt with according to the law because it threatens both peace and community security.”

The Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ozalla Unit, Mrs. Ozioma Okeke, praised the council’s readiness for the festive period. She stated, “Last year’s traffic success was possible because the council chairman supported us with logistics and manpower. With these renewed plans, we expect even better results in maintaining order and safety on our roads.”

Officials from the Civil Defence Corps and the DSS also encouraged community volunteers to support the free flow of traffic in their respective communities. They stressed that round-the-clock patrols, early reporting, and community sensitization would further boost both community security and accident-free celebrations.

Mrs. Okeke reiterated that cooperation among all security agencies is crucial, adding that Nkanu West’s coordinated traffic and security system remains one of the strongest in the state.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary to the Local Government, Barr. Onochie Igwesi; Chief of Staff, Barr. Chidi Anih; Special Adviser on Security, Ozoemena Nwobodo-Nwobodo-Agbo; and Special Adviser on Special Duties, Moses Anih. Their presence reinforced the administration’s unified commitment to protecting lives and property throughout the festive season.

With these new measures, Nkanu West Local Government appears strongly positioned to deliver safer roads, calmer communities, and a peaceful Christmas atmosphere anchored on strengthened community security and enhanced inter-agency coordination.
