The Niger State Police Command has arrested seven robbery suspects in Minna following a series of coordinated operations aimed at curbing violent crime across the metropolis.
The arrests were confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun.
According to the statement, police surveillance operatives attached to the Tudun-Wada Division intercepted two robbery suspects on a motorcycle during a stop-and-search operation along the Western Bye-Pass on November 17 at about 9 p.m.
The suspects, aged 18 and 20, were apprehended at the Texaco area of Maitumbi. A locally made firearm was recovered during an immediate search. Abiodun said the two men could not provide any credible explanation for their movement, increasing suspicion that they were robbery suspects targeting commuters along the route.
Further investigation is ongoing, and the suspects will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna.
In a separate operation on November 14, police operatives attached to the Central Police Division conducted a sting raid on identified crime hotspots in Sayako, Tudun-Natsira, Abdul-Salam Quarters and Baida. Five additional individuals were arrested with illicit drugs and a sharp weapon.
The police described the arrested individuals as robbery suspects and confirmed that all seven have been charged with criminal conspiracy, thuggery, possession of dangerous weapons and possession of illicit substances.
