Nigeria–Sierra Leone Relations: President Tinubu Hosts President Julius Maada Bio for Strategic Talks in Abuja

Abuja, November 8, 2025 – In a significant boost to NigeriaSierra Leone relations, President Bola Tinubu on Friday evening hosted Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Though official details of their closed-door meeting were not immediately released, the talks reportedly centered on strengthening regional peace, security, and economic integration within the West African subregion.

President Bio, who currently serves as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeded President Tinubu in June 2025. His visit to Nigeria comes four months after assuming the leadership of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government – a position that continues to play a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria–Sierra Leone relations and regional diplomacy.

In a statement on his verified X handle, President Bio noted that he arrived in Abuja to deliver a keynote address at the 12th Convocation Ceremony of Baze University and to engage African business leaders on sustainable growth and development.

This official trip marks President Bio’s first visit to Nigeria since taking over as ECOWAS Chair, reflecting both nations’ shared commitment to democracy, counterterrorism, and economic collaboration.

Observers say the Abuja meeting reinforces Nigeria–Sierra Leone relations as a cornerstone of West Africa’s diplomatic and economic framework. Both leaders are expected to deepen cooperation on security challenges, regional trade expansion, and initiatives that promote inclusive governance and stability across ECOWAS member states.

President Tinubu’s administration has consistently emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships with neighboring countries like Sierra Leone to achieve lasting peace, prosperity, and regional unity – key goals in the broader ECOWAS vision for integration and sustainable development.
