Enugu, Oct. 28, 2025 – The LGAN President, Mrs. Evelyn Oyome, has described golf as a sport that unites people from all walks of life while significantly improving health and overall well-being.

Speaking at the 10th Enugu Ladies Open Golf Championship held in Enugu, the LGAN President emphasized that golf promotes unity, discipline, and physical fitness among players regardless of age, gender, or social status. She explained that regular participation in golf not only strengthens the heart but also enhances endurance and reduces stress levels.

According to the LGAN President, walking an average golf course for a round covers between five and seven kilometres, making it an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise. She noted that walking 18 holes three to five times a week provides an optimal level of endurance training for the heart. “If you pull your clubs and carry them, you burn even more calories and gain greater health benefits,” she added.

Reflecting on her performance at the championship, the LGAN President, who emerged the overall winner, expressed joy over the success of the event. “This is my first time playing in Enugu, and I must say it has been an amazing experience. I played 84 gross on the first day, 80 on the second, and 83 today. This wrap-up tournament of 54 holes will remain memorable for me,” she said.

She commended Lady Nkiru Agbogu, Captain of the Lady Golfers of Enugu Golf Section, and her committee for organizing a successful tournament aimed at showcasing the talents of female golfers across Nigeria. The LGAN President described the event as a celebration of dedication, friendship, and the growing visibility of women in golf.

As her tenure as LGAN President nears completion, Oyome revealed that her Vice President, Dr. Lami Ahmed of the IBB Golf Club, would soon take over leadership. She also addressed misconceptions about golf being an elitist sport, advising beginners to start modestly without investing in expensive trolleys or golf bags.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Enugu Sports Club, Mr. Ifeanyi Nweke, represented by former Chairman Chief Nnanna Atuonwu, described the championship as “three memorable days of sporting excellence.” He noted that the Enugu Sports Club, established in 1929, continues to uphold its legacy of promoting healthy living and sportsmanship.

Nweke praised Lady Agbogu for her dedication in hosting the championship and commended the visiting golfers for embracing Enugu’s culture and hospitality. “I am sure participants will return home with fond memories of Enugu and its local delicacies,” he said.

Captain of the Golf Section, Enugu Sports Club, Mr. Ikem Okoye, also congratulated participants for their outstanding performances and lauded Agbogu for successfully hosting the competition.

Earlier, Lady Agbogu expressed gratitude to God for the successful completion of the championship despite funding challenges. She explained that organizing such a large-scale event required extensive sponsorship and support from individuals, companies, and organizations.

The LGAN President highlighted that the tournament, themed “Fostering a Sense of Camaraderie with Golfing,” featured 50 lady golfers from different states and 75 male guest golfers. Prizes and trophies were presented to winners across various categories during the grand finale, marking another milestone in Nigeria’s women’s golf development.
