An Atmosphere of Gratitude and Grandeur
The ancient community of Ugwuomu Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State was awash with celebration and splendour on Sunday, October 5, 2025. It was the market day of Orie, yet the usual rural serenity gave way to a carnival of faith, colour, and pride as indigenes, friends, and dignitaries thronged the community for a momentous occasion – a Thanksgiving and Civic Reception in honour of Gov Peter Mbah in Ugwuomu and their illustrious son, Dr. Felix Nnanyelugo Nnamani, Commissioner for Labour and Employment in Enugu State.
From the early hours, the air in Ugwuomu was filled with a rare blend of reverence and jubilation. Traditional drums throbbed gently against the mellow sound of church bells, while women in shimmering George wrappers moved gracefully like waves of colour across the dusty roads leading to St. Mary’s Catholic Parish, Ugwuomu Nike.
It was more than just a civic event; it was a symbolic fusion of faith and governance – embodied in Gov Peter Mbah in Ugwuomu and the man of the moment beside him, Dr. Felix Nnamani.
Holy Mass of Thanksgiving: A Sacred Prelude
The celebration began with a solemn Song Mass of Thanksgiving, a prestigious liturgical ceremony presided over by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga. Co-celebrating with him were Prof. Christian Anieke, Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI); Rev. Fr. Peter Chukwu, Parish Priest of St. Mary’s; and several other reverend fathers.
Also in attendance was the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, who read the Second Reading – a scriptural reminder of leadership as service and humility.
In his homily, Bishop Onaga reminded the congregation, particularly those in public office, that “every position of power is held in trust for the people.” His words echoed the ethical compass of Gov Peter Mbah in Ugwuomu, whose leadership model has inspired renewed faith in governance.
The Bishop commended the governor for his courage, speed, and transformational vision in education, innovation, and infrastructure. “Governor Mbah’s commitment to public good stands as a model of purposeful governance,” he declared.
Voices of Gratitude: From the Organising Committee
After the Mass, the celebration moved into a lively civic reception that mirrored the warmth and unity of Ugwuomu. The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Hon. Samuel Ekene Ugwu, together with the Town Union President General, Chief Anayochukwu Jude Ugwu, and High Chief Augustine Anike, welcomed guests with heartfelt gratitude.
They lauded Gov Peter Mbah in Ugwuomu for the honour done to their community by appointing Dr. Nnamani to the State Executive Council, describing him as “a beacon of humility and diligence whose appointment re-energized Ugwuomu youth.”
They also applauded the governor for the ongoing development projects – the durable Ngene-Ukwa and Onicha-Agu roads, the Smart Green School, and the Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centre, all of which have transformed Ugwuomu’s social landscape.
Yet, they appealed passionately that Ugwuomu Nike be considered in future political inclusions, especially the Local Government Chairmanship position, which no indigene has held since the creation of the LGA 1997.
LGA Chairman’s Remarks: Stewardship and Development
The Executive Chairman of Enugu East Local Government, Engr. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, in his address, painted a compelling picture of progress anchored on vision and partnership.
He highlighted achievements in rural electrification, rehabilitation of feeder roads, construction of modern classrooms, and micro-credit support for traders and artisans.
He also cited the council’s waste-management reforms and beautification of junctions as evidence of local development.
“Our achievements reflect the enabling environment created by Gov Peter Mbah,” Engr. Anike noted, pledging continued collaboration for greater impact.
Governor Mbah’s Message of Hope and Accountability
Representing the governor, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Professor Sam Ugwu, conveyed the governor’s greetings and message of hope.
According to him, Gov Peter Mbah in Ugwuomu symbolizes a partnership of trust between government and citizens.
“The governor sends his love and appreciation to the people of Ugwuomu. He believes our duty in government is to serve, to deliver results, and to leave no community behind,” Prof. Ugwu said.
He emphasized that Mbah’s administration operates on urgency – guided by the mantra Tomorrow is Here. He reaffirmed the governor’s dedication to infrastructure, education, and job creation, pledging that Ugwuomu will remain a focus of development.
Royal Honours: A Moment of Pride and Tradition
As the sun tilted westward, the arena glowed with regal brilliance. The highlight came when royal fathers gathered to confer chieftaincy titles in recognition of humility, service, and transformative leadership.
The Chairman, Enugu East Traditional Rulers Council, HRH Igwe Dr Emma Ugwu, led the conferment – supported by HRH Igwe Engr. Damian Ikechukwu Ede and HRH Igwe Emeka Ugwu (Esq.).
The community’s Oha-Ugwuomu Council, represented by High Chief Augustine Anike on behalf of the late Elder Paul Anike, performed the traditional rites before the presentation of titles.
In his remarks, HRH Igwe Dr. Emma Ugwu said the honours were well deserved. “Governor Mbah has brought new energy and credibility to governance. Dr. Nnamani reflects that same spirit of service,” he declared.
Gov Peter Mbah in Ugwuomu received the title “Ekwueme of Enugu State” – He Who Speaks and Acts – a tribute to his consistency and moral courage. Dr. Felix Nnamani was honoured as “Ebube Ugwuomu” – The Glory of Ugwuomu – while his wife, Lolo Sandra Nnamani, received “Ugodiya.”
Drums rolled, ogene clanged, and chants of onye oma! – “a good man” – filled the evening sky.
Dr. Felix Nnamani’s Words of Appreciation
Visibly emotional, Dr. Felix Nnamani thanked God and the people for their love and faith.
“I dedicate this honour to the people of Ugwuomu and to our dear governor whose leadership has given me a platform to serve meaningfully,” he said.
He pledged continued commitment to youth empowerment, skills development, and industrial harmony that promotes workers’ welfare, assuring that Ugwuomu would always have his voice in the corridors of power.
A Gathering of Distinction and Culture
The event drew a constellation of dignitaries – members of the Enugu State Executive Council, House of Representatives, traditional rulers, clergy, academics, and captains of industry.
Among them was the Chairman, South-East Council of Traditional Rulers and also chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Igwe Dr Samuel Asadu, who commended Gov Peter Mbah in Ugwuomu for redefining governance. “We see in him a leader who listens and acts,” he remarked, blessing both honourees for their service to humanity.
The celebration climaxed in a rich cultural pageant – masquerades, drummers, and dancers adorned in raffia and coral beads electrified the venue. The rhythmic pulse of Okanga, Ekwe, Ogene, and Ikelegwu music mingled with laughter and the aroma of palm wine, symbolizing a community deeply rooted in heritage yet embracing progress.
A Fitting Conclusion
As dusk descended upon the green hills of Ugwuomu, the people joined once more in a closing prayer of thanksgiving. There was music, laughter, and the reaffirmation of a shared faith that leadership, when guided by service and trust, becomes a blessing.
For Ugwuomu Nike, it was not merely a day of celebration but a chapter of hope – proof that under Gov Peter Mbah in Ugwuomu, the bond between governance and gratitude continues to blossom. GMTNewsng
