Benue Governor Pushes ‘Innovative and People-Friendly Taxation’ as States Share Ideas on Reforms, Emmanuel Nnamani Backs Synergy

MAKURDI, September 27, 2025 – The Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), in collaboration with T. A. Williams Firms, has hosted a two-day capacity-building workshop to align its operations with the Nigeria Tax Reform Acts 2025 and boost internally generated revenue. The training, held in Makurdi on September 24–25, 2025, drew tax administrators from across the region who described it as a platform for synergy and knowledge-sharing in modern tax administration.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by his deputy, Barr. Sam Ode, declared the programme open, stressing that his administration’s vision is to “put a human face to taxation.” According to him, the new reforms are designed to make tax processes transparent, people-friendly, and development-oriented, ensuring that citizens see the direct benefits of their contributions.

Acting Chairman of BIRS, Mr. Joseph Kwaghgba, explained that the workshop would strengthen staff capacity and institutional accountability. He said, “The reforms are not just about raising revenue. They are about building trust, improving service delivery, and aligning Benue’s tax system with the national fiscal framework.”

Traditional rulers, including the Tor Tiv, HRM Prof. James Ortese Ayatse, and the Ochi’Idoma, HRM Elaigwu Odogbo John, praised the initiative, noting that the reforms would promote harmony between government and taxpayers.

Representatives of T. A. Williams Firms, Dr. Haruna Dzugwahi and Dr. Tion A. Williams, commended the governor’s foresight and pledged to support Benue in modernizing its tax administration through technology and strategic partnerships.

Speaking to newsmen at the event, Mr. Emmanuel Nnamani, Chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, emphasized the importance of collaboration among states. He noted that “sharing experiences and models across states is crucial for building stronger tax systems. What we learn here in Benue can inspire innovation in Enugu and other parts of the country.”

Delegates from Nasarawa State IRS also shared practical models that had improved revenue performance in their state, further underscoring the workshop’s role as a hub for exchanging best practices. Participants described the training as highly impactful and expressed optimism that the Nigeria Tax Reform Acts 2025 would reshape tax administration in Benue and beyond. GMTNewsng
