Obasa Reinstated as Lagos Speaker Two Months After Impeachment
In a significant political development, Mudashiru Obasa has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, March 3, 2025. His reinstatement comes nearly two months after his impeachment over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The re-election followed the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who had succeeded Obasa in January.
Obasa’s return to the speakership was facilitated by a nomination from Noheem Adams, the former Majority Leader representing Eti-Osa Constituency I. The House’s decision to reinstate Obasa reflects an effort to resolve the leadership crisis that has plagued the Assembly in recent weeks. Meranda, in her resignation speech during Monday’s plenary session, described her decision as a “personal sacrifice towards resolving this gravely, intangible leadership crisis rocking this assembly of patriots.”
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, has been a longstanding member of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2007. He first assumed the role of Speaker in June 2015 and held the position until his removal in January 2025. His re-election marks a notable comeback in the state’s legislative leadership.
The leadership crisis began on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was impeached by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House over alleged misconduct and other offenses. His deputy at the time, Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to hold the position in the South-West state.
Meranda’s tenure as Speaker was marked by efforts to stabilize the Assembly amid internal disputes. Her resignation and Obasa’s subsequent re-election are seen as strategic moves to unify the legislative body and ensure effective governance in Lagos State. Meranda has now returned to her previous role as Deputy Speaker, demonstrating a commitment to collaborative leadership.
Obasa’s reinstatement is expected to bring continuity and experience to the Assembly’s proceedings. As the legislative arm of Lagos State navigates this transition, stakeholders and constituents alike anticipate a renewed focus on legislative duties and the advancement of the state’s developmental agenda.
