In a landmark achievement with the potential to power economic growth in Aba, Abia State, Geometric Power Ltd is on the verge of unveiling a significant electric power infrastructure. Preparations for the commissioning of the 188-megawatt Geometric Power plant are in the final stages, promising to supply non-stop electricity to the area and positively disrupt the region’s energy sector.
The anticipation among the city’s residents and businesses is palpable as Engineer Ben Caven, Geometric Power Ltd’s Managing Director, and former chief of multiple divisions at the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), provides updates on the project. “This is a significant moment for Aba; the promise of uninterrupted power is within reach,” stated Caven, showcasing the project’s ambition.
Recently, the dialogue between Geometric Power officials and the leaders of the Aba Landlords Protection and Development Association (APALDA) has culminated in an agreement that shapes the future of the area’s electric power. This progressive discourse has paved the way toward resolving the final challenges ahead of the power plant’s commissioning.
The unveiling of the power plant, however, is contingent upon overcoming a significant challenge: the awaited supply of natural gas to the facility. Despite the readiness of the vital pipeline, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) has yet to commence gas delivery. Engineer Caven explained, “The technical commissioning of the plant hinges on the NNPCL’s gas supply, which we eagerly anticipate for operational commencement.”
The ongoing issue of gas delivery can be traced back to a legal entanglement involving the former operator of Oil Mining Lease (OML) 17. The NNPCL’s subsequent involvement, aiming to elevate Nigeria’s hydrocarbon industry to international significance, has energized efforts to revamp the aging gas infrastructure. “The final chapter of this saga draws to a close with NNPCL’s commitment to uphold the highest standards in gas supply,” Caven affirmed.
Once operational, the Geometric Power plant’s initial turbine alone will double the electric output to the Aba Ring-Fenced Area. “By implementing advanced technology, we are not just promising better power supply but transforming it into a reality for millions,” stated Caven, highlighting the project’s potential for far-reaching impact.
Engineer Caven conveyed immense optimism about the expected economic revival, particularly in Aba’s industrial sector. “A constant and affordable power supply is a catalyst for industrial growth, turning Aba into a powerhouse of African manufacturing,” Caven stressed, envisioning a future where the city can earn back its title as the “Japan of Africa.”
Acknowledging the substantial investment sunk into the Geometric Power Group, Caven asserted that the dividends of this investment will flow from a stable and satisfied customer base. “It’s a symbiotic relationship; the success of our customers energizes our venture,” he shared, emphasizing how each component of the power supply chain is interconnected.
The conversation inevitably touched upon the new electricity tariff, a source of concern among the consumers. Caven sought to clarify misconceptions, stressing, “Aba Power is not the architect of electricity tariffs. The responsibility lies with the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), informed by the ever-changing economic conditions.”
As the briefing neared its close, Engineer Caven dedicated time to directly address all the project’s supporters. “The progress we’ve made is a tribute to your enduring support. We are transitioning into an era of reliability in energy supply – this is just the beginning,” he conveyed, paying homage to the community that stands to benefit from this undertaking.
Reiterating the project’s significance, Caven thanked the stakeholders for their steadfast support, providing the backbone for a journey that is now nearing a triumphant milestone. He reflected on the collaboration, patience, and determination that characterized the initiative.
In his final remarks, Caven cast a vision of Aba as a beacon of industrial strength in Nigeria. “As we power up the Geometric plant, we are powering up the potential of every home, every business, and every dream in Aba,” proclaimed Caven, summing up the transformative nature of the endeavor.
The promise of a self-sufficient, well-illuminated Aba is not just a dream but a near reality, as Engineer Caven’s concluding thoughts reflected an unequivocal confidence in the bright future awaiting Aba, bolstered by the unremitting flow of electricity soon to be generated by the Geometric Power plant. With this, Aba is on the brink of an electrifying breakthrough that will redefine its destiny and potentially set a precedent for power distribution across Nigeria. GMTNewsng
