A significant disruption in the national electric power system occurred at 13:49 pm, impacting various regions, including Aba. The National Control Centre (NCC), situated in Oshogbo, Osun State, confirmed the collapse of the national grid. Despite the gravity of the situation, sources from the Control Centre, who chose to remain anonymous due to lack of authorization, refrained from disclosing specifics regarding the cause of the system failure or an estimated time for power restoration.
The outage directly affected Aba, prompting Aba Power Ltd, the 12th distribution company in Nigeria, to address consumers within its defined service area covering nine local government areas in Abia State. In a statement, Patrick Umeh, the Managing Director of Aba Power Ltd and a former commissioner at the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), expressed sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by the blackout.
Umeh stated, “The NCC engineers are working diligently to restore electricity nationwide as soon as possible.” This assurance from the Managing Director underscores the commitment of Aba Power Ltd to resolve the issue promptly and resume power supply. The statement highlighted the collaborative approach being taken to swiftly address the challenges faced in restoring normalcy to the power grid.
While the exact nature of the problem remains undisclosed, Aba Power Ltd’s acknowledgment of the issue and their transparent communication with consumers underscore their commitment to resolving the matter promptly. As the nation grapples with this unexpected power outage, the anticipation among affected communities, including those served by Aba Power Ltd, is centered on the swift resolution of the technical challenges, allowing for the resumption of regular power supply.
