…I am satisfied with what I have and happy with what I am doing ~Obi
World’s largest training ground for Catholic priests, Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, has applauded the philanthropic gestures of the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi.
The Rector of the school, Rev. Fr Dr. Albert Ikenwa expressed the mood of the Bigard family while interacting with GMTNews reporter.
He dismissed the stringy claims of some people about Obi, noting that his school has benefited from his philanthropy when he donated some money and a bus to his school, praying God to crown his (Obi’s) other endeavours with success.
“He gave us a Coaster Bus and some cash. If that is what stingy people do then I love them”.
In his unrelenting show of philanthropy, His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, on September 7, 2021, donated One Hundred Million Naira (₦100,000,000) to Bishop Shanahan Hospital of Nursing and Midwifery, Nsukka, Enugu State.
Meanwhile Mr Obi has said he ventured into refugee work as well as offering financial support to health institutions and schools across Nigeria in order to help humanity as well as rebuild the depreciating health sector which serves as a vital component of human existence and schools which are training grounds for Nigeria’s future leaders.
According to Mr Obi, Nigeria needs help, pointing out that providing funds for schools and health facilities is a better way to assist the country to rebuild the depreciating education and health institutions in many parts of Nigeria.
Mr. Obi believes, this will afford students and the people the opportunity of receiving good education and sound health so that they can conveniently pursue other interests in life.
Recall that Peter Obi donated N1.5m to Madonna Catholic Hospital, Umuahia. He noted that Nigerian leaders are not getting their priorities right, stressing that majority of them neglect the basic things of life like schools and health institutions in pursuit of material things.
Peter Obi said that his philanthropy as well as his financial support to schools and health institutions is to nudge other leaders to get their priorities right.
“I don’t believe in acquiring wealth, buying houses in London, New York and other cities of the world. I’m satisfied with what I have and happy with what I’m doing, helping to save lives across Nigeria and in fact all over the world”, he said.
He explained that the gesture was borne out of his passion for humanitarian service, saying that he began his refugee work ever before he became the governor of Anambra in 2007.
“I’ve been to Afghanistan, Rwanda and Haiti doing refugee work as my contribution to alleviating the plight of citizens of the war-torn African countries and disaster prone areas of the world.
“What I do is planned to give and the intention is to awaken people’s consciousness and consciences about the need to do good for humanity. It has nothing to do with being in government or politics.
“And I want people to know that being in politics is not only about contesting and winning elections, but finding a way to touch lives positively in or outside government,” Peter Obi said.
Peter Obi in the past had visited and assisted well over 170 schools, which included about 46 health institutions, across Nigeria during which he did commit over N200 million to the project that included cash donations and pledges which had been redeemed.
On where he generated the funds, the Labour Party presidential candidate stated that the funds were raised from his personal resources as well as from support from his friends and people around him, who shared his vision and passion.
